Citizens Bank 3 Mile Walk
Welcome to the Citizens Bank 3 mile walk. The walk starts just after the 5K runners take off on their race.
The course for the walk is the same as the run, so you can cheer on the runners
as they return toward the finish line. Who knows? You, yourself, might be
inspired to run a little!
The roads will be closed to traffic for your safety. This is a great way to
start the day and enjoy a brisk walk with your friends. The walk will finish in
plenty of time to get the kids to their events and watch them run, bike rodeo, and do the obstacle course.
Benefits of Walking
Whether you are a daily power walker or if you are just starting
out, walking is a wonderful and safe way to exercise. We all know it is low
impact (easy on our bodies), but did you know about these benefits?
1. Walkers Live Longer. So says the Honolulu Heart Study of 8,000 men. It
found that walking just 2 miles a day cut the risk of death in half. If you keep
walking you improve your chances of a longer and healthier life.
2. Walking Helps Prevent Weight Gain. Sedentary people generally move
only 2,000 to 3,000 steps a day (about 1 mile). Studies have shown that moving
6,000 steps a day significantly reduces the risk of death, and 8,000 to 10,000
steps a day promotes weight loss.
3. Walking Reduces the Risk of Cancer. Many studies have shown that
walking and exercise reduces your risk of breast cancer and colon cancer. It is
also beneficial for those undergoing cancer treatment, improving their chances
of recovery and survival.
4. Walking Reduces Diabetes Risk. A study by the University of Pittsburgh
discovered that walking 30 minutes a day cut the diabetes risk for overweight
and non-overweight men and women. It also helps maintain blood sugar levels for
those with diabetes.
5. Walking Boosts your Brain Power. The National Council of Aging found
that walking 45 minutes per day at a 16-minute mile pace increased the thinking
skills of those over age 60. Younger folks also benefit by the increased blood
flow and relief from stress.
6. Walking Improves Mood and Relieves Stress. Feeling down? Take a walk.
Stressed out? Go for a hike. Walking and other exercise leads to the release of
the bodies natural happy drug - endorphin. Most people note and improvement in
mood after they exercise, plus they report lower stress levels.
These are just six reasons to start walking. The good news is that results from
walking happen fast! Researchers have found that 30 minutes of cardio exercise,
such as walking, combined with a change to a healthier diet, will significantly
lower your risk of diabetes, cancer, and heart disease within six weeks. So what
are you waiting for? Start walking.
